Rain plays havoc with the schedule

MYSORE: The revival of the monsoon in Karnataka might be welcome news for the farmers but not for the tennis fraternity here as rains continued to play havoc with the schedule of the Raghuveer Tennis Academy’s AITA Talent Series championship.

Frequent spells of heavy showers curtailed the day’s play and only eight main draw matches were completed here on Tuesday.

Most of the ties in the boys’ under-14 singles were lop-sided affairs. Top seed Rithvik Anand of Tamil Nadu crushed V. Sriram of Karnataka 6-0, 6-0 in the opening singles and set the tone for the other ties.

In the girls section, however, Kavya M. Kumar of Karnataka overcame a spirited challenge from Dimple Verma in a super tie-breaker at 6-0, 5-7, 10-5 (super tie-break).

In another well contested tie, S. Sameeksha defeated Maria Gaffar 1-6, 6-4, 10-9 (super tie-break).

The organisers have a tough task on hand to clear the back log of ties, but the RTA has eight courts and they are confident of getting the tournament back on rails.

RTA’s director Raghuveer said that as a precautionary measure, he has taken permission from the KSLTA and the AITA to extend the tournament by another day (Saturday), in case if they were not able to stick to the schedule of completing the championship on Friday.

Girls’ u-14, singles (first round): Manisha Bajpai bt M.C. Shainika 6-4, 6-2; Kavya N. Kumar bt Dimple Verma 6-0, 5-7, 10-5; S. Sameeksha bt Maria Gaffar 1-6, 6-4, 10-9; Kruthika S. Raj bt Dhwani Kumar 6-1, 6-1.
