Senate expresses concern

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Senate of the University of Kerala has expressed concern and anguish over “attempts to malign the university” over the conduct of the university assistants examination in 2005.

An adjournment motion to this effect was passed at a meeting of the Senate here on Tuesday.

In his reply to the motion, syndicate member A.A. Rasheed said the syndicate was ready to face any inquiry in this matter.

The examination in question was conducted in the same manner in which the university assistants examination was conducted in 1991. It was the nominated syndicate that conducted the examinations in 2005, the present syndicate was only completing the process, Mr. Rasheed said.

In this case, those who raised allegations had not even given legal apparatus of the land enough time to examine the allegations in detail. Even before this they pronounced the university guilty, said K. Sunilkumar who tabled the motion. Three senate members who tried to obstruct the proceedings were removed by security personnel, a press note issued here said.

Convention centre

In reply to a question by A. Sampath, syndicate member A. A. Rasheed said the university would consider setting up a convention centre on the premises of the University Students Centre.

Question papers for various examinations were scrutinised by the scrutiny board. Henceforth the scrutiny board would meet at the university offices, syndicate member Mohammed Kunju said.

Semester system

The university would introduce the semester system for degree courses from 2009, as per the directions of the Kerala State Higher Education Council.

The university would consider setting up a committee to frame guidelines to ensure adequate infrastructure facilities for this, syndicate member C. Bhaskaran said.
