Verify rice quality, Rosaiah tells Naidu

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Finance Minister K. Rosaiah has challenged Telugu Desam president N. Chandrababu Naidu to accompany him to any stock-point or fair price shop of his choice in the State to verify the quality of rice being supplied under the subsidised scheme.

If Mr. Naidu was not able to visit to a stock-point due to his ‘Mee Kosam’ yatra, he should at least name the fair price shop where he found the rice of inferior quality.

‘Misleading public’

Rebutting a charge made by Mr Naidu that the rice supplied under the scheme was found to be unfit for consumption, the Minister said if the TDP president failed to prove his charge, the government would believe that he was misleading the public.

At a press conference here on Tuesday, Mr Rosaiah said Andhra Pradesh always surrendered fine as well as common varieties of rice to the Food Corporation of India towards its procurement.

The FCI, in turn, released a mix of these two varieties to the subsidised scheme.

The rice available in the State was normally of good quality.

There was not a single complaint from white cardholders on this score, the Minister said.

In contrast, it was during his tenure as Chief Minister that very poor quality rice from Punjab was supplied leading to widespread protests, Mr. Rosaiah alleged.
