THAMARASSERY: The district-level inauguration of the Newspaper In Education (NIE) programme of The Hindu in Kozhikode was held at Alphonsa Senior Secondary School, Thamarassery, on Wednesday. Fr. George Thomas Chelakkal, Principal of the school, launched the programme at the school. Fr. Tomy K.M., vice-principal and Sebastian K.V., NIE coordinator at the school, spoke. Launching the programme, Fr. George Thomas Chelakkal said that students could observe the outside world through the newspaper. It was incumbent upon newspapers to give a purpose and direction to the minds of students, he added. The school has been with the NIE programme developed by The Hindu for the last couple of years. The programme is aimed at increasing the proficiency of school students in various faculties. It consists of various modules such as Language Skills, Me and Myself (with sessions on handling examinations, designing, behavioural skills), Me and Others, Science and Mathematics, Humanities, My Safe Planet and Culture and Heritage. Each module consists of various skills sets from which individual schools can select. The modules have been specially designed to cater to students of Classes VII, VIII, and IX. The programme currently benefits over six lakh students in 46 cities across the country. The response to the NIE programme from schools in the districts of Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad has been very encouraging this academic year. More than 40 schools have already registered for the programme in these three districts. Alphonsa School had selected the skill set of public speaking for Class VII, study skills for Class VIII and social skills for Class IX.
