Uphold citizens’ rights, says Governor

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Governor R.S. Gavai has said that it is the moral responsibility of those in power to safeguard and uphold the Constitutionally-guaranteed rights and privileges of all citizens in the country.

Presenting the ‘Best Minister’ Award instituted by Asianet TV to Water Resources Minister N. K. Premachandran here on Wednesday,

Mr. Gavai pointed out that good governance and good political conduct demanded a deep sense of dedication on the part of Ministers, leaders and activists. Rather than polite pronouncements, there must be a profound sense of purpose and an unflagging spirit of commitment. However, commitment without competence would not lead to the desired goal. Both were complementary, he said.

The Governor, who was addressing the first public function after assuming office, recalled his association with Mr. Premachandran when he was a Rajya Sabha member and said he had had several opportunities to share his views with Mr. Premachandran and interact with him.

‘Best among equals’

Mr. Gavai also congratulated Asianet TV for its initiative of honouring political personalities through a democratic process on the basis of their performance and noted that all the members of the State Cabinet were performing well with a fair degree of conviction and dedication, carrying out the solemn task they had been entrusted with.

Mr. Premachandran had emerged successful in this healthy competition of equally competent colleagues, he said.

Seminar

The award presentation was preceded by a seminar on ‘Good Governance and Reforms.’
