20 lorries seized in Namakkal

NAMAKKAL: A team of officials from various departments seized 20 lorries, which were being operated using kerosene meant for supply under the Public Distribution System (PDS) in the district on Tuesday.

A total of 19 persons were arrested in this connection. Following widespread complaints from the public, officials led by Collector U. Sagayam conducted vehicle checks at Valllipuram bypass, Andagalur bypass, Muthalaipatti bypass and Tiruchi road in the district.

The team also seized 3,000 litres of kerosene worth Rs. 90,000 from the vehicles.

Mr. Sagayam warned that the administration would initiate stern action against persons who were illegally transporting PDS goods, including rice and kerosene.

Stringent action would be taken against lorry operators if they were found using PDS kerosene as fuel in the vehicles. The administration would continue the vehicle checks and efforts would be initiated to prevent the use of PDS kerosene as fuel in the vehicles, he added.
