New Delhi
The Faculty of Management Studies at Delhi University organised its unique annual feature -- “silent auction” -- this past week. At the auction, students offer innovative items for sale. Each student puts up an item on offer and others bid for it. The auction was organised by the social service cell of FMS called “Vihaan”. This year the “silent auction” was a huge success with Rs.65,000 being collected by the students, an increase from Rs.21,000 last year. The money raised through the auction would be distributed to two or more non-government organisations. Last year the money collected was used to sponsor the education of girl children through “Deepalaya”. The single item that raised the highest amount this year was accounting classes, which was sold for Rs.5,000, an increase of over 60 per cent over last year. A dinner date was sold for Rs.4,000, setting a record as the costliest date at FMS. The other well-fought bids included “a trip to old Delhi”, “mantras of success at FMS by a senior”, “salsa classes” and “notes and assignments”. “It is not about the money or the items, but about being able to contribute to society in a way that is fun too,” said a first year student, Mufeed-ur-Rehman. Pavitra Gupta, a second year student, added: “The silent auction serves as a perfect ice-breaker between the two batches, as this was the first informal event after the hectic induction fortnight. This was a perfect platform to boost camaraderie and long-lasting friendships within the FMS fraternity.” Jawaharlal Nehru University Vice-Chancellor B. B. Bhattacharya was honoured recently with the Baroda Sun Life Time Achievement Award by the Bank of Baroda at a function held in Mumbai. The function was held on the occasion of the bank’s 101st Foundation Day. The award includes a citation and a trophy. The award was given to Prof. Bhattacharya for his contribution in the field of Economics. Aligarh Muslim University has submitted an ambitious development plan of over Rs.11,000 crore under the 11th Plan to a visiting team of the University Grants Commission. Underscoring the need for equity, access and inclusion, Vice-Chancellor P.K. Abdul Azis has proposed to start 168 new courses in the University. He urged the visiting team to consider creation of 799 additional faculty positions and providing around R s.868.54 lakh for creating infrastructure for Information and Communication Technology. Prof. Azis has also asked for two halls of residence for the students to accommodate 1,000 boys and girls each. He has proposed three new hostels for differently-abled students, apart from construction of new buildings like community centre and examination complex. Frameboxx Animation and Visual Effects has announced the launch of Clickboxx.tv – an online animation and visual effects training website. Clickboxx.tv would offer courses on animation and visual effects for students as well as professionals through the Internet as high-quality video-based lectures. “With Clickboxx.tv we mark the beginning of a brand new vertical where we will continue to innovate new and exciting services and introduce world-class animation and visual effects training programmes,” said Frameboxx Vice-President (New Media) Sachin Bhatnagar.
