Making plans: MLAs belonging to five political parties holding discussions at the Assembly complex in Puducherry on Wednesday. — PUDUCHERRY: Legislators belonging to five political parties on Wednesday decided to call on Lieutenant Governor Govind Singh Gurjar and seek his intervention to end the stalemate in the territorial administration. The MLAs said the entire Cabinet should be held responsible “for the lack of performance of the government.” The MLAs of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), the Puducherry Munnetra Congress (PMC), the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), who met in the Assembly complex, unanimously decided to observe a fast on August 1 to highlight the demand. Briefing reporters on the decisions taken at the meeting, national council member of the CPI and MLA representing Reddiarpalayam constituency R.Viswanathan said the legislators had expressed their dismay over the “non-implementation of announcements made on the floor of the Assembly and non-implementation of the welfare and development schemes.” The MLAs who attended the meeting also flayed the government for its “failure” to sort out issues related to the allocation of seats by the managements of private medical colleges to the government quota and implementation of the fee reimbursement scheme named after Kamaraj for candidates selected by the Centralised Admission Committee, Mr. Viswanathan said. The Puducherry Kamarajar Medical College and Research Institute project in the government sector had run into rough weather and implementation of schemes such as old age pension were facing problems, the MLAs had pointed out. Describing the meeting as spontaneous, Mr. Viswanathan said MLAs belonging to any party were free to join them in voicing their protest against the administration. The MLAs would submit a memorandum to the Lt. Governor highlighting major problems that had to be tackled by the government, he said. The legislators would also request Mr. Gurjar to convene the Assembly to discuss the burning issues, he added. The legislators would undertake the proposed fast at Gandhi Thidal, opposite the statue of Jawaharlal Nehru, he said. Among others, R. Siva, M.A.S. Subramanian and R. Rajaraman (DMK), K. Lakshminarayanan and N. Anand (PMC), R.K.R. Anantharaman and P. Arulmurugan (PMK), R. Viswanathan and N. Kalainathan (CPI) and P.R. Siva (MDMK) participated in the meeting.
