TIRUVANNAMALAI: The State government has sanctioned a proposal to construct additional school buildings in seven higher secondary schools in Tiruvannamalai district with an assistance of Rs.3.89 crore from the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) this year, according to E.V. Velu, Food Minister. Inaugurating an upgraded higher secondary school in Pazhayanur in Tiruvannamalai panchayat union on Wednesday, Mr. Velu said four middle schools were upgraded into high schools and five high schools into higher secondary schools in Tiruvannamalai this year. The State government has allotted Rs.123 lakh for the renovation and repair of school buildings in the district during the current financial year. Free uniforms have been provided to students of elementary, high and higher secondary schools in the district at the cost of Rs.1.75 lakh during 2008-09. Mr. Velu also inaugurated a part-time fair price shop and a new fair price shop building at Pazhayanur. He said a total of 1.97 crore families were supplied rice at Rs. 2 a kg through public distribution system throughout the State. Mr. Velu distributed colour television sets to 497 beneficiaries at a function held in Melkacharapattu in Tiruvannamlai panchayat union and 590 sets at a function in Velayambakkam in the union. M. Rajendran, Tiruvannamalai Collector, presided. T. Venugopal, Tirupattur MP, G. Thamarai, District Revenue Officer, and Kamakshi Kannan, chairperson, Tiruvannamalai panchayat union, spoke.
