Red Ribbon Express arrives in Hassan

HASSAN: The Red Ribbon Express, which is on a mission to create awareness among public on HIV/AIDS, was given a red carpet welcome at the Hassan railway station on Wednesday.

The Deputy Commissioner, the Superintendent of Police, the Chief Executive Officer of Hassan Zilla Panchayat, the president of the zilla panchayat, the president and the vice-president of the City Municipal Council were among those present on the occasion.

A stage was put up on the main platform for the function.

Coordinator of Nehru Yuva Kendra said that nearly 40,000 people had visited the train in the State at Bangarpet Junction, Bangalore Cantonment and Mysore railway station.

The campaign was launched by the National AIDS Control Organisation, Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, Nehru Yuva Kendra, Indian Railways and the UNICEF, he said.

The train which began its journey on December 1, 2007 from Delhi is scheduled to return to Delhi by December 1, 2008. The train had completed the tour of 15 States, he said. The seven-coach train is equipped with education material on HIV/AIDS, interactive touch screens and 3-D models, a platform for folk performances and doctors’ cabins, besides pantry and dining area.

The first three coaches have an exhibition on HIV/AIDS. The fourth coach has facilities to hold interactive sessions and training for 60 people, particularly to women members of self-help groups (SHG), medical personnel, police personnel, panchayat members and anganwadi workers. The fifth coach has doctors’ and councillors’ cabins.

Students of various schools and colleges witnessed the exhibition. Zilla panchayat president C.N. Balakrishna, who inaugurated the programme, advised people to treat HIV-infected people humanely.
