BERHAMPUR: Director General of Police (DGP) Gopal Chandra Nanda on Wednesday made a sudden visit to naxal-infested Malkangiri district to review and plan anti-naxal operations in the area. It may be noted naxals are now observing Martyrs’ week in their stronghold areas of Orissa. Mr Nanda was accompanied by senior officials including ADG Manmohan Praharaj and DIG Operations Arun Sadangi. His visit was kept a closely guarded secret till his arrival. After reaching Malkangiri the DGP paid tributes at the police Martyrs’ memorial at the Special Operation Group (SOG) headquarters. He then chaired a closed-door review meeting at the officers’ mess of the SOG barracks. This meeting was attended by Malkangiri SP S. K.Gajbhiye and district Collector N.B.Jawale. The DGP inspected the remnants of the anti-landmine vehicles hit by landmine blast on July 126. The debris of the vehicle was brought to SOG Malkangiri police headquarter for investigation. The vehicle made up of two-inch-thick sheets of steel was blasted by the naxals killing all the 17 policemen in it. Later, speaking to newsmen at Malkangiri, Mr Nanda said welfare measures were being taken for the policemen and their families serving in Malkangiri district. New security measures and extra battalions would be deployed for the anti-naxal operations in the State.
