Naveen details measures taken for farmers, tribals, women and youth Rs. -2-a-kg rice for BPL families and the backward KBK region, he says
On the offensive: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik taking part in the rally by Biju Janata Dal youth and student wing in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday. BHUBANESWAR: Chief Minister and Biju Janata Dal president Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday came down heavily on the United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre for allegedly neglecting the State on various fronts. Addressing a rally organised by the youth and students wings of the BJD here, Mr. Patnaik said the UPA Government had ignored the demand of the State Government with regard to fixing minimum support price for paddy. The BJD president said the UPA Government had ignored the issues raised by his Government with regard to the formulation of new national mineral policy, which he said would be detrimental to the interest of the State. Mr. Patnaik also spoke about the recent demand of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha before the UPA Government for merger of three districts of the State with Jharkhand. “We will oppose the demand raised by the JMM at all levels,” he said. Mr. Patnaik used the occasion to give details of the various measures his Government had taken for the benefit of farmers, tribals, women and youth by launching numerous schemes and adopting new policies. Holding the UPA Government responsible for the problem of price rise and inflation, Mr. Patnaik said that his Government had decided to launch the Rs. 2-per-kg rice scheme for those living below the poverty line across the State as well as the above poverty line families in the KBK region to cope with the situation. Although the rally was organised by the youth and students wings of the party, it was mostly attended by party workers from different parts of the State. The meeting was attended by scores of party leaders, Ministers, members of Parliament and legislators and many of them addressed the rally and urged the party workers to work hard to help Mr. Patnaik win the coming polls to become Chief Minister for the third consecutive term. All those who spoke on the occasion blamed the Centre for almost every problem facing the State and highlighted the achievements of their government during the past nine years. Thousands of people joined the rally despite rain in the morning hours. But when Mr. Patnaik addressed the meeting at last a majority of the people had left the venue.
