AIIMS trims panels; reshuffle at senior level

Bindu Shajan Perappadan

NEW DELHI: The All-India Institute of Medical Sciences which is awaiting a new Director has had a makeover of sorts. It has put in place a much lighter and more streamlined group of committees.

It has downsized the number of committees from 93 to 19 mandatory and nine other committees and has also issued orders for reshuffle of personnel occupying “sensitive posts” for over three years.

Earlier this month orders were issued to reconstitute over 20 committees to which a new set of members were assigned. While the letters issued for reconstitution stated that the changes were being made in keeping with the decision taken by the Governing Body at its meeting last December, senior faculty members at the Institute have questioned why the process has been initiated under a “caretaker director”. They are also upset with the selection of members to various committees.

According to the order issued on July 14, “AIIMS has nominated Dr. Shashi Kant, Professor of Community Medicine, to act as faculty in-charge of the telemedicine facility at the Institute”.

Earlier on July 3 and 8, letters were issued to order transfer and posting of senior administrative officers at the Institute and over 20 committees witnessed changes in membership.

Orders were issued for taking on new members to several important committees including medical and hospital management boards, sexual harassment committee, research committee and committee on bio-safety for recombinant DNA research.

The Institute’s Deputy Director, Dr. Shailesh Kumar Yadav, said: “The changes have been carried out as per the decisions cleared by the Governing Body meeting held last December. A need was felt to downsize the bulky committee system that we were working with. The Institute had as many as 93 committees and that has been downsized. We have only retained the committees that are essential for the Institute.”
