Amnesty condemns Babu’s murder
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: Amnesty International India has deplored the murder of Karnataka State Convenor of National Alliance of People’s Movements A.T. Babu and urged the State Government to arrest all those involved in the murder and provide police protection to the two colleagues of Babu who were eye-witness to the act.
Alleging that the liquor mafia could be behind the murder as Babu was spearheading a movement against arrack and liquor, the organisation urged that his family be adequately rehabilitated and that the State Government take steps to ensure that human right defenders were not subject to harassment or intimidation.
In a letter to Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, Director of Amnesty International India Mukul Sharma asked that the case be investigated thoroughly and impartially and its findings be made public.
The Government, he said, should ensure that human right defenders in the State enjoyed all the rights enshrined in international law.
