Okhla to get new water treatment plant

Project to improve substantially water supply in many colonies
Scheme of payment of water bills through 92 post offices to continue

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Jal Board on Wednesday gave its approval for construction of a 20 million gallon per day (MGD) capacity water treatment plant at Okhla that would be completed within 21 months from the award of work. The decision was taken at a meeting of the Board presided over by its chairperson, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

The Board also decided to continue the scheme of payment of water bills through 92 post offices. It approved laying of Bela Road Trunk Sewer through micro-tunnelling, laying of sewer lines in some more rural villages and purchase of 28,000 water meters for the New Delhi Municipal Council.

After the meeting, Ms. Dikshit said the Okhla plant would treat water that would be saved on completion of Munak Canal. The project would cost around Rs.107 crore and include construction of a raw water pumping station at Wazirabad.

The Chief Minister said the project would result in substantial improvement in water supply in many colonies. The Board, she added, had also sanctioned laying of the Bela Road 6.3 km trunk sewer line through micro-tunnelling. This line would be completed by February 2010 at a cost of Rs.33 crore. It is part of the Yamuna Action Plan Phase-II Project for which assistance has been received from the Japan Bank for International Corporation.

Ms. Dikshti said the Board had decided to lay sewer lines in some more Delhi villages including Karawal Nagar, Sadatpur, Dayalpur and Garhi Mandu. Sewer lines are being laid in 25 other villages.

The Board also extended the scheme for payment of water bills through 92 post offices as consumers have found it very convenient. It approved several projects pertaining to laying of feeder lines for connecting underground reservoirs and shifting of lines.
