Post a doctor at Capital’s stations, court tells Railways

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday asked the Railways to attach at least one doctor and para-medical staff at all the major railway stations in the Capital. It also constituted a three-member committee to look into the matter and report within two weeks.

Hearing a public interest litigation filed by lawyer Purnima Sethi, a Division Bench of the Court comprising Chief Justice A.P. Shah and Justice S. Muralidhar said it was sad that there was no basic medical facilities available at railway stations.

Since railway stations were public places, availability of basic medical service and medicines was a must, it said. “At least one doctor should be available round-the-clock,” it added.

The High Court also constituted a three-member committee comprising a doctor, a lawyer and a senior railway official to personally visit all major railway stations in Delhi and submit its report within 14 days.

It has set September 3 as the date on which it would consider the report and issue further directions.

Ms. Sethi in her petition had alleged that Nizamuddin railway station did not have basic medical facilities and ambulance services and was not even disabled-friendly with no lifts and wheelchairs available.
