HYDERABAD: Agriculture Minister N. Raghuveera Reddy on Wednesday said the menace of spurious seed had come down considerably after the Seed Village Programme was launched by the government. He also asserted that the fake seed problem would be eliminated in the near future.

Addressing a gathering where he distributed paddy seed free to farmers, he asked the A.P. State Seed Development Corporation and other related agencies to shoulder greater responsibilities, as the aim of the programme was to free farmers from the clutches of seed companies.

Breeder seed

He said while the agriculture university produced breeder seeds, the State agencies developed the foundation seed through 126 seed production centres.

The foundation seed in turn was being given to farmers who were developing certified seeds. The Minister distributed ‘Tella Hamsa’ paddy seed produced by a progressive farmer, Jagan Goud of Gummadivalli village, Ranga Reddy district.

He lauded Mr. Goud for producing 50 quintals of paddy in an area of two acres under Seed Village Programme.

The seed thus produced could be used in 160 acres to produce around 2,250 quintals of seed.

The government had introduced the Seed Village Programme to ensure that the farmers produced quality seed themselves and shared them among themselves.

Scheme lauded

He said the certified seed to be produced by the farmers this year was expected to be around 18 lakh quintals as against 3.5 lakh quintals during 2005-06.

Kodanda Reddy, Chairman of APCC farmers’ wing, lauded the programme as it would help the farmers increase production. Managing Director, APSSDC, Vidyasagar spoke.
