Painful

This refers to the news that the Samajwadi Party leader, Kishor Samrite, offered 242 goats and four buffaloes at the Kamakhya temple in Guwahati for the UPA government’s victory in the trust vote (July 29). With due regards to faith, I would like to know whether goats and buffaloes cannot be utilised in a better manner instead of being sacrificed on the altar. Surely, there are better ways of celebrating a victory?

Raghu Seshadri,

Chennai

* * *

It was painful to see the picture of goats herded together in the Kamakhya temple to be sacrificed. I admit that thousands of animals are killed every day for human consumption but they are not butchered in public view, much less in a place of worship. A stream of blood at a place of worship is the most abhorring sight I can think of.

P.V. Divakaran,

Avittathur
