News Analysis
The second paragraph in an AP report “Singapore devours eating contest” (“Newscape” page, July 29, 2008) was “About 300 competitive eating fans roared as local favourite Kobayashi of Japan slammed home 5 kg of grilled Singaporean chicken ‘satay’ in 12 minutes in Sunday’s contest. California’s Chestnut was a distant second, munching down 8.4 kg.” It was an editing error and should have been “California’s Chestnut was a distant second, munching down four kilograms.” The third paragraph in an AFP report “Beggars now choosers” (Some editions, “Newscape” page, July 29, 2008) was “They [a group of beggars in Bangladesh] demanded the local council fix the minimum rate of alms at one taka (about Rs.6). One taka = 0.56 paise (Indian). The caption of a standalone AFP photograph (“Newscape” page, July 28, 2008) was “A big draw in Tokyo — A Giant Spectacle: A beluga whale exhales a bubble ring as part of a performance at the aquarium AQUAS in Hamada, some 700 km southwest of Tokyo, on Saturday ….” The caption blurb “A big draw in Tokyo” was an error. Hamada is 700 km from Tokyo! The caption of the accompanying AP photograph in a report “Hope at last over Doha Round of trade talks” (“Business Review” page, July 28, 2008) was “Make-or-Break: World Trade Organisation Director-General Pascal Lamy of France arriving in Geneva, Switzerland, for the WTO ministerial summit on trade liberalisation last week”, leading to queries on who Mr. Lamy was in the photograph. He was in the foreground, with his right forefinger on his nose. It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible.
