Dr. Arunkumar Bhatt Mumbai: Dr. Arunkumar Bhatt, Senior Assistant Editor and Deputy Chief of Bureau, The Hindu, Mumbai, passed away on Tuesday night of a massive cardiac arrest. He was 53 years old and had been with The Hindu for 17 years. He died in Anand, Gujarat, where he had gone to visit his mother. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Jayshree Bhatt, their 15-year-old daughter Aditi, and his mother. A keen student of defence studies, Dr. Bhatt held a doctorate from the University of Pune, and an MA in Defence Studies from the University of Madras. In 2006, his book Psychological Warfare and India, based on his doctoral thesis, was brought out by Lancer Publishers. The book received favourable reviews from his peers. A commerce graduate from the University of Mumbai, he entered journalism, working for a brief while in the Gujarati daily Jam-e-Jamshed. He also did two stints at The Indian Express between which he worked for The Daily. He worked with Hindustan Times before joining The Hindu in Ahmedabad in 1991 as a correspondent. He moved to the Mumbai bureau in 1995 as a Special Correspondent. Dr. Bhatt was quintessentially a reporter, always alert to his surroundings and his stories reflected this. He was working on his second book — a study of the Burmese campaign during the Second World War. Defence issues were the closest to his heart. Condolences have poured in from many quarters, including the Chief Minister’s Office, the Commandant of the Coast Guard, and the Defence Public Relations Office.
