Madurai: Nipulraj’s off a penalty corner in the 70th minute helped State Bank of India (Chennai) edge past Ever Great Hockey Club (Vadipatti) 1-0 and enter the quarterfinals of the 16th annual Rajamani-K. Anagamani Ammal Memorial Trophy State-level hockey tournament at the Police Centenary Stadium, here on Wednesday.

SIT wins title

At Karaikudi, Sethu Institute of Technology (Kariapatti) beat Sudharsan College of Engineering (Pudukottai) by 70 runs in the final of the Anna University Zone IX inter-Collegiate cricket tournament on Wednesday.

The scores: Final: SIT (Kariapatti) 170 for five in 25 overs (Muthukumar 30, Mohenkumar 46) bt Sudharsan CE (Pudukottai) 100 in 21.1 overs (Selvendran 32, Orner Kathof three for 27).

Rajasekaran triumphs

At Tirunelveli, P. Rajasekaran of VOC College (Tuticorin) regained the men’s title, while Vishnu Priya of Holy Cross College (Nagercoil) won the women’s title in the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University chess tournament on Tuesday.

Final placings: Men: 1. P. Rajasekaran (VOC College) 8.5/9; 2. Vinoth Kumar (Scott Christian College) 8.5; 3. Bingston Durai (Noorul Islam College) 7.5; 4. Velavan (Pareanakalyani College) 7; 5. Andrew (Adithanar College, Tiruchendur) 6.5.

Women: 1. Vishnu Priya (Holy Cross, Nagercoil) 9/9; 2. Michael Forgia (St. Mary’s, Tuticorin) 7; 3. Selva Ashuntha (St. Mary’s) 7; 4. Thanga Vadana (Govindammal College, Tiruchendur) 7; 5. D. Gayathiri (Saradha College) 6.5.

VHNSN triumphs

At Sattur, VHNSN College (Virudhunagar) won the title in the Madurai Kamaraj University inter-Collegiate ‘D’ Zone badminton tournament, defeating Ayya Nadar Janakiammal College (Sivakasi) 3-1 in the final on Tuesday.

The results: Final: VHNSN College bt AJ College 3-1 (Michael bt Karthikeyan 21-3, 21-8; Moses Rajkumar lost to Dinesh Sankar 14-21, 13-21; Barani & Michael bt Dinesh Sankar & Rajganesh 21-17, 21-16; Barani bt Rajganesh 13-21, 21-14, 23-21). Semifinals: VHNSN College bt SRNM College (Sattur) 3-0; AJ College bt SBK College (Aruppukottai) 3-0.

American College wins

At Madurai, American College Higher Secondary School lifted the Joseph Memorial Cup defeating Virudhunagar Hindu Nadar HSS 25-19, 25-12, 25-11 in the final of the district-level inter-School volleyball tournament, organised by the Xavier MHSS on Wednesday.

Earlier in the semifinals, AC HSS bt Mangayarkarasi HSS 25-15, 25-14, 25-23 and VHNHSS bt St. Mary of Leuca 25-15, 25-17, 25-10.

Chess tournament

At Sivakasi, Rathinam Chess Academy will organise the Southern Districts open rapid chess tournament.
