Triple fest to tap talent of students

Younger generation urged to concentrate on composing poems

TIRUCHI: ‘Pudukavithai Poonga’, a students’ journal, in an effort to identify the talents of the student community and to motivate them, organised a ‘Mupperum Vizha’ here recently.

A workshop on poetry, release and introduction of books and 17th anniversary of Pudukavithai Poonga marked the festival held throughout the day.

The former head of the Department of Tamil, Bishop Heber College, K. Pooranachandran who inaugurated the poetry workshop, urged the younger generation to concentrate on composing poems which centred around social themes. Youngsters should think about the problems confronting whole society in every walk of life, he said.

Prof. Pooranachandran released a special souvenir brought out in connection with the 17th anniversary of the ‘Pudukovithai Poonga’ and the Editor of ‘Naalai Vidiyum’ journal received the first copy.

A special session participated by poets Mayura Rathinasamy, Rathika, Sowrirajan and P. Bhagawadgita discussed the trend of the Tamil poetry from Sangam period till the modern era. The students interacted with the participants at the end.

The Coordinator, Centre for Youth Development and Studies, Bharathidasan University, S. Ayyampillai, presided over the books introduction session. Poet Rathika introduced the book ‘Nedunchalaiyai Kadakkum Nathai’ authored by Mayura Rathinasamy and the convener of Shenbaga Tamil Arangu, Raja Ilangovan introduced the book ‘Pournamiyaaga Pirai Nilavugal’ authored by Prof. Bhagavadgita.

The Professor of Tamil, St. Joseph’s College, E. Soosai, presided over the book release session and he handed over the first copy of the book ‘Nirangalin Perasaikarargal’ authored by Athangode Anishkumar to S. Gopalakrishnan of the Agasthiar Publishing House. The founder of the Shebaga Tamil Arangu K. Rajavelu Shanbagavalli and K. Tamilazhagan offered felicitations.

A large number of students took part in the poem composing competition. Mahalakshmi and Kiruthika, both of Bharathidasan University, won the first and second prize respectively.

While the third place went to Ranjitha of Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College, Ramesh of Jamal Mohamed College won the fourth place. Special awards were given to Sylvia of Pavendar Bharathidasan Arts and Science College, Aishwarya and M. Naseema Khatoon of Shrimati Indira Gandhi College and K. Ramesh of Bharathidasan University. Prof. Ayyampillai distributed the prizes.
