Panel discussion on ‘The Future of Hyderabad’s Heritage’ organised Experts urge Government to play pro-active role HYDERABAD: Preservation of heritage structures in the city has become a tough task due to lack of encouragement from the government, felt several experts at a panel discussion on ‘The Future of Hyderabad’s Heritage’ here on Wednesday. Experts urged the government to play a more pro-active role in identifying and also preserving the heritage structures at the meet organised by the Centre for Deccan Studies (CDS). Even the Superintending Archaeologist of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), Jitendra Das, too felt that his organisation could succeed in its objective only if there was “some cooperation” from the government. 24 wards surveyed“Our city has almost 1,500-2,000 old buildings that can be declared as heritage structures. So far, we have surveyed 24 wards and will finish another 35 wards in the next three months,” said M. Ved Kumar of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) - A.P. Chapter. Mr. Kumar made a presentation on INTACH’S project to identify the heritage buildings in twin cities in collaboration with the Hyderabad Urban Development Authority (HUDA). The Forum for Better Hyderabad’s M. Mandal asked government departments to consider heritage preservation when they go for development works at such precincts. He also advised the government to give incentives to owners of heritage buildings to help their preservation. CDS president V.K. Bawa, secretary Sajjad Shahid and others too voiced their concern on heritage conservation.
