Students turn teachers

Staff reporter

KOCHI: From next month onwards, four students of the Mar Ivanios College, Thiruvananthapuram, will have an entirely different assignment.

Asha Ajith, Devi Priya, Akhil and Anuradha — second year BA Economics students, will be the core team behind a quiz programme that will be aired in ViCTERS (Virtual Classroom Technology on EDUSAT for Rural Schools) Channel under the IT@School project.

And this is one of the features of the programme, named Quiz Time, the first episode of which will be aired on August 3.

From preparing questions, to sorting out the answers received and to anchoring the quiz will be the responsibility of these students.

The programme will be transmitted thrice a week; on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 7.30 a.m. and then again at 7 p.m.

The programme, being launched as a part of further developing the content of the channel, targets schoolchildren up to the Plus Two level.

“The aim is to establish a link with the children and to fuel their interest in general knowledge,” sources said.

In each episode, 10 questions will be asked and the students will have seven days to answer these questions. Questions will cover practically all topics from sports, Nobel Prize trivia, science and history.

In keeping with its stated objective of enhancing the general knowledge of the students, the questions will not be that simple and would prod the inquisitive urge of the students.

“They would be encouraged to consult their teachers and parents besides researching for the answers on their own,” sources said.

The answers can be e-mailed, posted or faxed. A tie would result in draw of lots to select the winner who will then be awarded, most probably, a cash prize.

A nominal cash prize would be awarded in the initial stages.
