Ritualistic fervour: Sikhs going in a procession displaying weapons of Guru Gobind Singh during the ‘Guru Maniyo Granth Jagriti Yatra’ in Hyderabad on Wednesday. - HYDERABAD: Gaiety and pomp marked the Guru Manyo Granth Jagriti Yatra as it traversed the lanes and by-lanes here on Wednesday. Thousands of Sikh devotees worshipped the religious relics put on public display for the first time in 300 years. Not just Sikhs, but people of other faiths too were seen craning their necks to catch a glimpse of various historical artefacts displayed on a modified vehicle. The Jagriti Yatra carried the handwritten scripture of Guru Granth Sahib, revered by Sikhs as their holy book and guide. Relics displayedAlso, sacred relics and rare weapons used by the 10th Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, were on display in the glass-encased carriage. The tastefully-decorated ‘palki’ with gold-plated tombs adorned with orchids was the focus of attention. Residents of Goshamahal, Sultan Bazar and Narayanaguda were witness to the vibrant and rich culture of the Sikh community. Led by police horses, the procession included Sikh martial performers known as ‘Kirtani Jathas’ and ‘Gatka’. A chopper showered flower petals on the procession. ‘Prasadam’ distributedWhile the womenfolk swept the ‘divine’ pathway of the procession, men formed a human chain to facilitate smooth progress of the one-km-long procession. ‘Prasadam’ and flavoured milk were distributed to devotees and residents wherever the procession went through. Community kitchens at various Gurudwaras maintained an endless supply of ‘Guru Ka Langar’. Later in the evening, ‘Vishaal Deewan’ was held at the NTR stadium opposite Indira Park where reputed ‘Ragi Jathas’ recited ‘Shabad Keertans’. A scintillating display of fireworks was held in the night before the yatra moved to Gurudwara Guru Singh Sabha in Ashok Bazar for night halt. The yatra will be on till August 1.
