“Police will conduct regular checks on browsing centres” CHENNAI: Installation of close circuit camera and maintaining a register with details of the visitors and log entry books were the measures underscored by the city police at a meeting on Wednesday, in which more than 300 Internet browsing centre owners participated. Addressing representatives of the browsing centres, Commissioner of Police R. Sekar said the Internet centre should follow mandatory provisions stipulated in the licences issued to them. Mr Sekar said an obscene mail or a threat message sent through mail could be easily traced to a system and the browsing centre from where it was sent. But, the police may not be able to trace the person who had used the system to send such a mail. In order to avoid such problems, the browsing centre owners were advised to maintain a register about the persons using the web connection. The owners should insist on some identity card and register the address of the person using the facility. Another important condition was installing of camera to help identify those using the facility, Mr Sekar said. Apart from this owners of the centres were advised to store the visuals captured by the camera data for some time. There were nearly 1,300 browsing centres in the city and the police would conduct regular checks on them to check whether they maintained records and strictly adhered to the norms laid down in their licence applications, Mr Sekar added. The meeting was held in the backdrop of the recent serial bomb blasts in Bangalore and Ahmedabad and the arrest of a suspected terrorist in the State. On Tuesday, the Commissioner held discussions with representatives of the IT firms and shopping malls on measures to enhance security.
