To safeguard power consumers from people who pretend as discoms employees

The problem of frequent breakdowns was also discussed in detail at the meeting

NEW DELHI: To safeguard the power consumers from people who masquerade as power distribution company employees to cheat consumers, Delhi Power Minister A.K. Walia has instructed all the discoms to provide uniform to all their field staff by August 15. The Minister issued the directions while chairing a high-level review meeting of the power sector which was attended by the Power Secretary, Chief Executive Officers of the three discoms and senior officials of the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission and the Power Department. Dr. Walia said the discoms should also ensure that the uniform was worn by all the field staff and that all the employees are provided with authentic identification so that people are reassured about their genuineness.

At the meeting, the problem of frequent breakdowns was also discussed in detail. While the officials claimed that there had been a marked improvement in power supply, Dr. Walia stressed the need for maintaining zero level breakdowns so that no hardship was caused to consumers. He also directed the discoms to make their respective business managers answerable for the breakdowns.

The Minister also reviewed the availability and tie-up position of power and assessed the progress in respect of projects coming up within the Delhi. He was informed that work on 1,500 MW gas-based combined Pragati-III Project at Bawana was proceeding on schedule. While soil investigation had started on June 15 and was expected to be completed by August 7, the award of work was expected by mid-August and the work would start by August 30.

The officials also informed that 250 MW generation at this plant would begin in March 2010, another 250 in May 2010, 500 in July 2010, 250 in September 2010 and another 250 in October 2010. They said the plant would be fully commissioned in October 2010 before the Commonwealth Games. Since a number of cases of tripping of power take place due to flying of kites, the Minister instructed that an awareness campaign be launched against metallic manja or cord that is used for flying kites since it also endangers the life of the person indulging in the pastime. He said the campaign should be undertaken through newspapers, awareness campaign in schools and FM radio. The Delhi police would also be approached to render cooperation in this regard, Dr. Walia said.
