Detention norms for students

HYDERABAD: As per the university rules, a first year engineering student has to clear a minimum of 50 per cent subjects to be promoted to the second year. Similarly, to be promoted to the third year, the student has to clear 50 per cent of second year subjects as well as all the first year subjects.

In the same manner, to be promoted to fourth year, the student has to clear a minimum of 50 per cent of third year subjects apart from clearing all the first and second year subjects. Students, who fail to fulfil these conditions, are detained.

According to Jagannadh Jetty, Vice-Principal, Osmania University College of Engineering, a student gets a minimum of two chances to be promoted from the first year to second year and three chances to be promoted from the second year to third year. He said, in the first year first semester, the student studies seven theory subjects and has five practicals. In the second semester, they study six theory and four practicals. However, the number of subjects changes depending on the branch.
