Fire in Bunder mosque

Staff Correspondent

‘Chaddar’ placed on the tomb burnt

MANGALORE: Some persons allegedly triggered a fire inside the Masjid Zeenath Baksh at Bunder here on Wednesday. However, devotees at the dargah quickly doused the fire, but a “chaddar” placed on the tomb burnt.

Superintendent of Police N. Sathish Kumar said there were contradictory versions from eyewitnesses regarding the number of persons who entered the mosque and committed the act at about 2.15 p.m. “While some eyewitnesses maintained that it was one person, others stated that two persons were involved,” he said. He said that the Mangalore North (Bunder) police had been directed to conduct a thorough probe into the incident and arrest the culprits.

The news of the incident brought a large number of people to the mosque. The police rushed reinforcements to the area to prevent any law and order problem. City sub-division Deputy Superintendent of Police D. Dharmaiah and Mangalore North Circle Police Inspector Umesh G. Shet inspected the area where the incident occurred and spoke to the mosque management committee.

Mr. Shet said that the police had registered a case under Sections 153 (A) , 295 and 436 of the Indian Penal Code.
