THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) and the Kerala Government Medical College Teachers Association (KGMCTA) have opposed the government move to bring different streams of medicine under the proposed medical university. The IMA felt that each stream of medicine should have a separate university. The move is against the recommendation of the Iqbal Committee that had suggested setting up mono-faculty medical university in the State, IMA State president S. Alex Franklin said. Administrative woesDr. Franklin said bringing different streams of medicine like modern medicine, ayurveda and homeopathy under one umbrella would lead to confusion. Moreover, mixing the treatment modes was not scientific and would not benefit patients. The move would cause problems in administration. The IMA urged the government to start separate universities for different streams of medicine. Sharing the view, KGMCTA president A. Sarat Kumar said the association would oppose the move. “The proposal, when implemented in other States, had been a failure,” he added.
