BELLARY: Poultry farms in Bellary and Koppal districts are in the doldrums owing to rise in the prices of feed, non-availability of maize and shortage of power and diesel, according to Srinivas of Sai Venus Poultry Farm, Hospet. He told presspersons here on Wednesday that the price of maize, the main ingredient of the feed, had gone up, and it was not easily available in open market. The price of maize used to be Rs. 550 a quintal last year. But this year, it had gone up to Rs. 1,200 a quintal, he said. Similarly, prices of broken rice, bran and oil cakes, which are used as feed, had also gone up, making it difficult for poultry farmers to run their business, Mr. Srinivas said. “The increase in the price of maize and its non-availability in open market was mainly due to forward trading,” he said.
