Students worried about their future

Ganesh Prabhu

Manipal: Students were shocked, concerned and worried about their future after the Medical Council of India (MCI) derecognised the MBBS course offered by the Kasturba Medical College (KMC), here on Wednesday. Some students felt that the KMC would be coming out of this test with flying colours, while others questioned the criteria for derecognition.

Joint Secretary of the Students Council of the college Adeeb Alam, a third year MBBS student from Abu Dhabi, told The Hindu: “The decision of the MCI came as quite a shock to me. It is disappointing to know that they are derecognising the college without any prior notice. We are in the middle of our course, which we will be completing in 2010. KMC is a renowned college in the country.

Sumeet Soni, a third year MBBS student, from Chandigarh said that the students were getting the best education and excellent facilities at the KMC. “We have more than adequate clinical facilities. We have the best faculty. I am concerned and worried,” she said. Her friend Karen, a third year student from Patiala, Punjab, expressed similar sentiments.

Ravneet R. Verma, a final year MBBS student from Jalandhar, said: “The MCI has tried this [derecognition] a number of times and failed. KMC is good enough to come out of this clean. I have been studying here for four years and am totally satisfied. The infrastructure available here is the best in the country. The college has student exchange programme with foreign universities. Do you think a foreign university will send its students here if the facilities are not good enough?”

Good faculty

Shashank Sharma, a third year student from Delhi, said that the students at KMC hardly missed classes. This spoke of the punctuality of the faculty. “Our teachers give power-point presentations.”
