CHENNAI: A cross-section of Muslim opinion leaders in the city has condemned the recent blasts in Bangalore and Ahmedabad and urged the government to bring to book the culprits behind the dastardly acts. In a signed press statement, the group that included religious leaders and academics said the act of targeting innocent people, and even hospitals, in a bid to settle scores was a slur on humanity. The signatories to the statement were Abdul Khaliq Nadwi, Khateeb, Masjid-e-Hira, Nagalkeni, Chromepet; Sathikh, former vice-chancellor, the University of Madras; Shariffa Azeez, correspondent, Crescent Group of Girls’ Institutions; A. Faizur Rahman and V. M. Khaleelur Rahman, freelance journalists; Fathima Muzzaffer, vice-president, Islamic Information Centre; T. M. Zackriah Badsha, former joint director of collegiate education; A. Naseema Begum, honorary coordinator, National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions; Kurshith Begum, joint secretary, Makkah Masjid; K. V. S. Habeeb Muhammad, vice-president, Islamic Foundation Trust and Asadulla K. M. Badsha, architect. Indian Muslims, they said, had great regard for the spirit of ahimsa, tolerance and harmonious coexistence of all religious communities and were duty-bound to protect this foremost national treasure. Stating that people of the country had been living in harmony for centuries, the group condemned the attempt to weaken the unique spirit of brotherhood or spread a climate of hate, communal polarisation and mutual distrust.
