NEW DELHI: World champion Viswanathan Anand won 38 games and drew two to improve upon his own 14-year-old record in the 40-player simultaneous display held as part of the Chess Classic of Mainz in the German town of Mainz on Monday. Anand, a 10-time winner of the rapid title including seven times on the trot once the annual event was shifted from Frankfurt to Mainz in 2001, had won 36 games and drew four, to set a record of 38-2 in the inaugural edition in 1994. This week, Anand drew with Roland Durmeier and Dmitrij Bondarew while beating the rest for a score of 39-1. Anand is due to defend his rapid title against three challengers, Alexander Morozevich, Magnus Carlsen and Judit Polgar in the rapid tournament beginning on August 1. Meanwhile, in the Biel Masters in Biel, Switzerland, youngster N. Srinath drew with seventh seeded Serbian Grandmaster Aleksandar Kovacevic in the eighth round. R. B.
