Grand Slam-Pistons tie poised for close finish

CHENNAI: Fifteen wickets fell on the second day of a low-scoring TNCA first division league thriller between Grand Slam and India Pistons at CPT-IP on Wednesday.

Both teams went in at stumps with a chance of victory on the final day. Grand Slam, resuming on 73 for three after bowling India Pistons out for 100, was bundled out for 131, off-spinner M. Prabhu grabbing five wickets. In its second innings, Pistons was 121 for eight, 90 runs ahead.

Jolly Rovers gained a stranglehold over UFCC (T Nagar) at IIT-Chemplast, enforcing the follow-on after the latter was bowled out for 123 replying to its 474 for nine declared.

Shravan scalps six

The wrist spinners dominated the wickets column for both teams, Shravan Krishnan emerging from the Rovers run fest with six wickets, and Piyush Chawla sending back four UFCC batsmen. Chawla had earlier made a 44-ball 52, adding 93 for the sixth wicket with ’keeper-batsman Petson Matthews (70).

At ICL-Gurunanak, Vijay CC gained the lead against Young Stars and ended the day with a chance of forcing a result. Overnight batsmen K. Varun Kumar and N. Einstein made fifties.

Left-handers R. Prasanna and K. Shree Vasudeva Das then added 91 for the fourth wicket, and spinners R. Ashwin and Sreekumar Nair put on 52 for the eighth. In the nine overs after Vijay’s declaration at 296 for eight, Young Stars reached 31 for one at close.

The scores: At CPT-IP: India Pistons 100 and 121 for eight in 73.2 overs v Grand Slam 131 in 56.2 overs (M. Prabhu five for 39).

At IIT-Chemplast: Jolly Rovers 474 for nine decl. in 97.1 overs (M. Vijay 95, V. Subramania Siva 54, S. Badrinath 125, J. Gowjith Subash 60, Petson Matthews 70, Piyush Chawla 52, Shravan Krishnan six for 129) v UFCC (T. Nagar) 123 in 51.4 overs (Piyush Chawla four for 49) and 83 for three in 35 overs.

At ICL-Gurunanak: Young Stars 172 and 31 for one in nine overs v Vijay 296 for eight decl. in 92.2 overs (K. Varun Kumar 53, N. Einstein 60, R. Prasanna 60, K. Shree Vasudeva Das 49, R. Ashwin 47).

At Murugappa: Parry’s 401 in 158.1 overs (Ra Arvind 58, I.K. Rohit 109, S. Anand 57, N. Raghavendra 53) v Globe Trotters 16 for no loss in 19 overs.

At MAC: Indian Bank 193 in 93.1 overs (S. Karthik 43) v Aruna 271 for five in 84 overs (S. Aniruddha 49, K. Noorul Riaz 85, P. Shijit Chandran 107, P. Sathish four for 74).

At Railway: Alwarpet 359 in 122.4 overs (M.O. Arjun Sarathy 48, R. Rohith 40, V. Maaruthi Raghav 126 n.o., Ashwin Venkatraman 40, P. Munuswamy five for 95) v Southern Railway Institute 159 for four in 48 overs (S. Raghunath 78 n.o.).
