Discovering newer worlds

Beyond the horizon: A still from the newly launched channel Discovery Science.

Discovery Networks India on Thursday announced the launch of three brand new channels to leverage its global portfolio in the highly competitive media environment.

To launch the three diverse 24-hour channels -- Discovery Science, Discovery Turbo and Discovery HD -- the company has applied to the Union Information and Broadcasting Ministry. The channels are expected to go on the air in the first quarter of 2009.

Addressing a press conference in the Capital, Rahul Johri of Discovery Networks India said the three channels containing a wider range of compelling, distinct and high-quality programming were aimed at satisfying the insatiable curiosity of discerning Indian viewers. “We know the desires, needs and preferences of our viewers. ‘Discovery Science’ explores everything from cheesecakes and fuses to canoe paddles and grandfather clocks. Though they are not the most exotic objects, they play an essential role in our daily lives. We will be presenting ‘Racer Girlz’ in Discovery Turbo that takes a look into the lives of women who are obsessed with their cars. Bringing viewers closer to the space station experience and to the cutting edge of entertainment is ‘Discovery HD’. It is the only high-definition television network offering lifestyle entertainment.”

Pointing out that “Destination Wilderness” on Discovery HD would offer a unique approach towards our planet, Mr. Johri said: “From the Arctic to Polynesia, across the African continent to the Isles of Indonesia, the series will show an insight into the lives of tribes living in harmony with the fragile nature. We will also beam ‘Moments in Time’ in which archaeological finds become tickets to travel back in time. ‘Discovery HD’ will give an update on what has been accomplished and what lies ahead for this orbiting science laboratory.”

“Discovery Turbo” will air “Speed on Wheels” that takes a unique, behind-the-scene look into the world of professional motorcycle racing. It chronicles the 2005-AMA Motorcyle Race series by following professional race teams as they go from motorcycle development to practice and to the track in hope of winning the ultimate prize.

“Discovery Science” will air “Medical Mavericks” that takes a peek into ground-breaking operations that push the boundaries of medical understanding. Featuring real subjects and utilising revolutionary graphics, the series will explain the science behind the medical advancements that pave the way to enter a new age of medicine.
