Workshop on haemotherapy at Perinthalmanna

Staff Reporter

PERINTHALMANNA: Al Shifa Hospital here will organise a day-long workshop on haemotherapy for treatment of diseases by the use of blood or blood derivatives on Sunday. The workshop will be conducted under the joint aegis of the Pathology and Transfusion Medicine of Al Shifa Hospital, the Indian Medical Association, and the Academy of Medical Specialities.

District Superintendent of Police P. Vijayan will inaugurate the workshop on Sunday morning. District Medical Officer Noorul Ameen will preside over the function. P. Unneen, managing director of Al Shifa Hospital, said on Thursday that haematologists and other medical experts would present papers at the workshop on various aspects of haemotherapeutics. There will be sessions on the importance of partial blood transfusion rather than complete blood transfusion, the importance of blood transfusion in cardiac surgery, transfusion during pregnancy, and the importance of blood components for foetal growth. A session will be devoted to discuss the importance of blood components for general surgery and for kidney treatment. Dr. Ravi Prakash, organizing chairman, and Dr. Sujata Mohankumar, organizing secretary, claimed that it would be the first haemotherapy workshop to be held in Malabar.

The workshop, aimed at creating awareness about blood transfusion among the public as well as imparting better concepts to medical students, would open new vistas in blood transfusion, said Mr. Unneen. Haemotherapy is a recently developed branch concentrating on the treatment of diseases by the use of blood and blood derivatives, as in transfusion. It involves various connected processes as partial blood transfusion, total transfusion, plasma application and so on.
