MALAPPURAM: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) district secretariat here on Thursday criticized the District Panchayat’s move against the controversial Class 7 social science textbook. A meeting of the CPI(M) secretariat described the resolution passed by the District Panchayat as a political gimmick and anti-democratic. The CPI(M) said the District Panchayat had flouted the norms of the Panchayat Raj system by making unnecessary intrusions into areas it had no jurisdiction. “It was a clear misuse of power,” said the CPI(M). The District Panchayat on Wednesday had adopted a resolution asking the State government to withdraw the textbook citing grounds that the book was promoting anti-religious feelings. The CPI(M) said that District Panchayat had no power to ask the State government to withdraw a textbook. “There was only political motive behind it,” it said. The party also criticized the District Panchayat for denying a resolution moved by the Opposition Leader V.V. Gopinath against the nuclear deal with America. It said the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML)’s pro-American sentiments were exposed.
