The six-lane flyover will be 560-metre-long Project to be completed within 24 working months, says Minister BHUBANESWAR: The Orissa Government on Thursday embarked upon an ambitious flyover project to cope with fast-growing traffic at Rajmahal Square, one of the busiest traffic junctions of the State. For the first time in the State, the Works Department would be putting place a three-tier flyover structure. On its completion not a single traffic personnel would be required to man the post and there would be no traffic signals. People could go in any direction they wish to go. Laying the foundation stone for the flyover project at Rajmahal, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said the new traffic system would meet the challenges of steep growth in traffic in the capital city. To be built at a cost of Rs. 67.31 crore, the flyover would facilitate smooth vehicular movement between AG Square and Kalpana Square. The six-lane flyover would be 560-metre-long. Traffic system has been divided into three parts. While the flyover would connect AG Square with Kalpana, a four-lane underground road would be laid between Master Canteen Square and Sishu Bhawan. The existing road, which would stay in between the flyover and underground road, will be developed at a cost of Rs. 13 crores. “We will complete the project within 24 working months and there would be no displacement. There is adequate space available alongside the roads connecting Rajmahal Square to materialise the scheme,” Works Minister A. U Singhdeo said. According to department sources, the present passenger car unit (PCU) passing through the Rajmahal Square is estimated to be 6300 during a peak hour. It has been projected that the PCU at the junction would go up to 26,500 per hour in the next 15 years. Mr. Singhdeo said the traffic structure would have adequate parking provisions from Master Canteen Square to Sishu Bhawan. Moreover, pathway in front of shops and passage for pedestrians would also be laid. The works department has not prepared a detail plan for the underground road yet. Earlier Chief Minister inaugurated a flyover, a crossing over railway line, near Ponama gate.
