BANGALORE: The land mafia has encroached upon prime property belonging to the wakf board in 135 cases in the State and nearly 80 per cent of the encroachers were Muslims. This was revealed by Minister for Wakf and Minorities Welfare Mumtaz Ali Khan in the Legislative Assembly on Thursday. In a reply to a question by Gurupadappa Nagamarapalli (Congress) during question hour, Dr. Khan said heads of mosques and religious bodies had encroached upon wakf properties in the State, and it was difficult to recover them. There was need to constitute a task force and a tribunal to deal with encroached properties. Dr. Khan said it was difficult to set a time frame to recover the encroached property. Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha K. Rahman Khan on Tuesday also urged Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa to constitute a task force for reclaiming such prime wakf property. SmokingThe Government has banned smoking in all public places such as hospitals, government offices, schools and colleges, temple premises and courts. An order to this effect was passed on March 3, 2003. Replying to a question by V. Somanna (Congress), Health Minister B. Sriramulu said no case had been registered against any persons found smoking in public places.
