KOCHI: Close to one lakh income tax assessees across Kerala filed their tax returns on Thursday, the closing day for TDS (tax deducted at source) payers, the salaried class and those who file their returns unaudited. Arrangements were made at the income tax officers in the State in the last three days for receiving the returns. Special counters and facilitation desk were set up at the IT Department’s offices at Kochi. Right from the morning, long queues had formed at the main IT office of the Kochi region at I.S. Press Road. There was a special counter for senior citizens. Income tax officials said that so far more than 3.65 lakh tax payers filed returns. The rest are expected to file their returns by September 30 when the deadline for audited returns ends. Last year’s figuresLast year, 5.71 lakh people had filed returns, of whom 3.67 lakh were from the Kochi region. Last year’s income tax collection from the State was Rs.1,564 crore and corporation tax collection stood at Rs.1,190 crore. This year, the combined target is Rs.3,475 crore. Online filingAll over India, there was an eight-fold rise in the number of people choosing to file their returns online. This hike got reflected in Kerala also, officials said.
