Chandigarh: Heavy rain lashed several parts of Punjab and Haryana since Wednesday, causing the mercury to fall by several notches. Naraingarh in Haryana was the wettest place receiving a heavy downpour of 163 mm, while Chhachrauli received 56 mm of rain, the Meteorological Department said here. Kalka recorded 25 mm of rainfall while Morni and Sonepat received 20 mm each. Raipur Rani (18 mm), Ambala (12 mm), Shahabad (11 mm), Panchkula (10 mm) and Nilokheri (8 mm) also had unusual showers. Low-lying areas floodedChandigarh received 45.6 mm of rain and many low-lying areas were flooded. In Punjab, rain lashed Amritsar on Thursday morning while Madhopur received a heavy downpour of 82 mm. The Shahpur Kandi belt recorded 88.2 mm of rainfall while it poured in Dasuya (61 mm), Mohali (40 mm), Nangal Dam (31.4 mm) and Kapurthala (13 mm). The rain eased the power shortage in the region that has been reeling under long power cuts ranging from four to eight hours daily. However, heavy rains also disrupted power supply in some places. – PTI
