Comes to A standstill: Knitting units in Tirupur observed one-day strike on Thursday.
Tirupur: Nearly 1,500 knitting units here stopped production for a day on Thursday protesting against frequent power cuts and the steep increase in raw material prices.
V. Subramanyan, treasurer of the Knit Cloth Manufacturers’ Association, said that the production loss was to the tune of Rs. 5 crore.
Units involved in production of knit cloth for the domestic and export markets and collar knitting had also stopped production.
The knitting machines numbering over 10,000 produce nearly 15 lakh kg of fabric a day. The association recently announced increase in knitting prices by Rs. 2 a kg for basic items and by 15 per cent for design fabric.
This would be implemented by the knitting units from August 1.
