BIDAR: Newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University, Bidar, Suresh S. Honnappagol on Thursday said that the university will be embarking upon 30 new research projects in 2008-09 and has earmarked Rs. 10 lakh for conducting research in animal, fisheries and dairy sciences.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Honnappagol said 44 extension research projects were under progress and of them 28 were in fisheries. For these research projects, Rs. 11 crore has been generated through the support of various national and international institutions.

Apart from funds set aside by the university for research projects, scientists and lecturers attached to the university have taken up research activities with the financial assistance from national and international institutions, he said.

The international institutions extending financial support to research activities are European Union Commission (EUC); Ford Foundation, United States of America; International Science Forum, Sweden; United States Development of Agriculture and adding to the list are support from Bio-technology department of Union Government, Science and Technology Department , besides funds have been generated from various other Union and State Government departments, he said.

Mr. Honnappagol said, the university will take up counselling for admissions to various courses from August 6 through videoconferencing, so that students need not come all the way to Bidar from distant places.

If any technical flaws occur during the course of counselling session, telephonic counselling of students will be held.

The Vice-Chancellor said that Extension Education Centres of the university have been constructed at Bidar, Mangalore and Bangalore campuses.

The centres would conduct training programmes for farmers under experts’ guidance. At Bidar, works are on to complete a farmers training institute at a cost of Rs. 1.5 crore.

The university came into existence four years back and it has achieved progress in conducting various extension activities for farmers, he said and added that “varsity has scope for further development.”

Varsity’s Director of Extension Shivananda Murthy and Registrar Devaraj were present.
