Historical structure razed in Raichur

Staff Correspondent

Raichur: A 121-year-old public building constructed during the Nizam’s rule in Raichur city, which once served as the office of the tahsildar, has vanished from the history of Raichur.

The building was razed on Thursday. The Public Works Department is now busy in the construction of a mini Vidhana Soudha on the site.

The building was constructed in 1887 during the regime of Mir Mahaboob Ali Khan, Nizam of Hyderabd, under the supervision by his Prime Minister Sir Salar Jung-I. It was used to house the office of the talukdar when Raichur was in Hyderabad State, and later the office of the tahsildar. The building was abandoned a decade ago even as it was strong enough.

The administration could have left the old building untouched which recalled the history of bygone era before independence. But it was razed to ground mercilessly by the administration itself.

It is strange to note that none of the social and cultural organisations such as the Hyderabad-Karnataka Janandolana Kendra, the Kannada Rakshana Vedike and the Raichur District Freedom Fighters’ Association made any efforts to save this historical structure.
