dated August 1, 1958: New Iraqi Republic

The Soviet Government in a statement issued on July 30 accused the Western Powers of plotting against the new Iraqi Republic. The statement was regarded in diplomatic quarters in Moscow as a disguised warning to the West that if it touched Iraq the Soviet Union would intervene. The Soviet statement read: “There is no doubt that if an aggression prepared by the member-countries of the Baghdad Pact is committed against the peaceful Iraqi people, fighting in a just cause, then the other peaceful peoples will come to the aid of the victims of aggression.”
