Combating terrorism

The people of Surat deserve praise for helping the police locate bombs in various places. So do the bomb disposal squads which defused more than 20 live bombs. I was amazed to see the image of a bomb placed on the road, with the person engaged in defusing it stooping over it. There were onlookers, including police personnel, on the scene. Both these situations are potentially dangerous. There is no guarantee that a live bomb will not explode in the process of being defused. It is unsafe for a person to stoop over it, even if he is wearing a bullet-proof jacket. Curious people too should know that an accidental explosion can cause injuries and even lead to fatalities.

I would like to congratulate the Gujarat government and the police who have done an amazing job by defusing over 20 live bombs. The courageous efforts of the police and the bomb detection squads will boost the confidence of the people in the police and help their efforts in fighting terrorism.

It is clear that local elements are involved in planning and executing acts of terror. So we have to look within, not towards east or west, if we are to come up with a useful strategy to combat the menace. Intelligence should be strengthened and the people should remain ever vigilant. Our objective should not be limited to paralysing the terrorists. We should extend the hunt into their home bases. We will not need POTA or a federal organisation if we take the initiative.

The secularists attribute terrorism to the Babri Masjid’s demolition and the 2002 Gujarat riots. The self-styled Indian Mujahideen’s email talks about the plight of Indian Muslims at the hands of Hindu fundamentalists. The Left parties remind us of the misdeeds inflicted on the minorities by both the Congress and the BJP. But everyone forgets the root cause — the Partition of India and the most treacherous proxy war Pakistan triggered in Kashmir.

The blasts in Bangalore and Ahmedabad, and the continuous discovery of live bombs in Surat, have terrorised the people. They make a mockery of our security system.

Somya Agarwal,

Lucknow
