Corrections and clarifications

The first paragraph of the accompanying box item “Pachauri to head six-member experts committee” (July 31, 2008) — in a main report “[Supreme] Court to await panel report on alternative alignment” — was “Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has constituted a six-member experts committee headed by Rajendra K. Pachauri, director-general, Tata Energy Research Institute ….” TERI, of which R.K. Pachauri is Director-General, is known as The Energy and Resources Institute. (This correction is appearing in this column for the fourth time. The earlier ones were on July 19, 2006, May 12, 2007 and January 25, 2008.)

In a report “We decided to expose masterminds: BJP MPs” (July 31, 2008), the fifth paragraph was “On June 21, according to the petition, one ‘intermediary’ took them to Meridien Hotel to meet a senior Congress leader, but ‘this meeting did not materialise.’” It should have been July 21.

The sixth paragraph in a report “Pranab holds talks with Ahmadinejad on energy ties” (July 31, 2008) was “Iran, he [Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad] said, also shared India’s concerns about terrorism in the light of the attack on the Indian embassy in Kabul and the blasts in Bangalore and Hyderabad.” It should have been Bangalore and Ahmedabad.

The last sentence in the third paragraph of a report “‘Policemen lack cutting edge to tackle terrorism’” (July 31, 2008) was “‘With a pittance being offered to constables in Delhi Police, it is no surprise that they are turning out to be performers,’ said a Delhi Police official who has put in nearly two decades of service.” It should have been non-performers.

A RIA Novosti report “Breaking the secret safe of Lake Baikal” (Op-Ed, July 31, 2008) said in the first two paragraphs that in a historic event — on July 29, 2008 — humans reached the bottom of Lake Baikal, the world’s deepest and cleanest fresh water lake, for the first time ever. Even if it had not reached the lake floor, the dive would deserve an entry in the Guinness Book of Records — no one has ever made a 1,700m freshwater dive.

A Reuters report now says that hours later, the Russian explorers have had to withdraw the claim. Organisers said they had reached the lake floor at a depth of only 1,580 m.

The first sentence in the last paragraph of a Mumbai report “ATS still clueless in blasts case” (July 30, 2008) was “The Deputy Chief Minister, who also holds charge of Home, R.R. Patil, reviewed the law and order situation in the State and has announced the setting up of a State Security Commission, as per the directions of the Supreme Court”, while the last sentence was “The State Security Commission will be headed by the Deputy Chief Minister or the Home Minister.” A reader found this confusing. The Special Correspondent clarifies that Mr. R.R. Patil is the Deputy Chief Minister and the Home Minister. The Maharashtra Government has announced the setting up of the commission. It will be headed by the Deputy CM or the Home Minister as a rule. The two need not be the same person every time. In this instance, Mr. Patil holds both charges.

The heading and first paragraph respectively of a report (July 29, 2008) was “1 million tonnes of edible oil to be imported monthly” and “Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar said the Centre would import one million tonne of edible oil every month for supply to various States for sale to below poverty line families (BPL) at a subsidised price.” A reader, quoting a government advertisement, said it should have been 10 lakh tonnes of subsidised edible oil is to be distributed during 2008-09. The reader also quoted an earlier report “Subsidised edible oil sale through PDS” (July 27, 2008) which had said that “… about 10 lakh tonnes of imported edible oil would be distributed at Rs.15 a kg.”

The Government will import one million tonnes of edible oil during the year — in addition to the annual import of edible oils — for this scheme, under which one million tonnes of edible oil will be distributed to States for “Below Poverty Line” and “Antyodaya Anna Yojna (Poorest of the Poor”) PDS families at a subsidy of Rs 15 per kg.
