Southern Railway enters semifinals

Madurai: Defending champion Southern Railway entered the semifinals of the 16th annual Rajamani-Kanagamani Ammal Trophy State-level hockey tournament with a 3-0 win over SBI at the Police Centenary stadium here on Thursday.

ICF also made the grade with a 2-0 win over GK Motors HC, Madurai. Indian Bank and IOB were the other teams to qualify.

The results (quarterfinals): Southern Railway 3 (Mahendra Singh, Mahesh, Divakar) bt SBI 0; ICF 2 (Rajendran, Paul Pandian) bt GK Motors HC 0; IOB 1 (Felix) bt AG Friends HC 0; Indian Bank 1 (Heartlin James) bt Central Excise 0.

MSSWB retains crown

MSS Wakfboard College retained the men’s title with a 3-2 win over Sourashtra College in the four-team league of the Madurai Kamaraj University Champion Trophy badminton tournament here.

The results (league):

Men: MSSWB bt Sourashtra College 3-2 (Kabir lost to Bharath 15-21, 21-17, 17-21; Rajasekar bt Karthik 21-13, 21-6; Rajasekar & Fazil bt Bharath & Karthik 25-23, 26-24; Fazil lost to Prasanna 11-21, 13-21; Kabir & Anil bt Prasanna & Darul 21-13, 21-15).

Vinodhraj, Kaliswari sizzle

S. Vinodhraj of MSP Solai Nadar HSS (Dindigul) and A. Kaliswari of Devangar HSS (Chinalampatti) won a sprint double each in the under-18 category of the Dindigul district junior athletic meet recently.

MSP Solai Nadar, with 97 points, won the boys’ overall title and Annamalayar HSS took the girls’ crown with 93.

Best athletes: Boys: U-20: P. Sahadevan (DKM School, Natham); U-18: S. Vinodhraj; U-16: C. Prabakaran (MSPSN); U-14: C. Sathishkumar (GHSS, Nilakottai).

Girls: U-20: R. Vanitha; U-18: A. Kaliswari; U-16: Vinosiya; U-14: A.B. Nisha (all Annamalayar).

STAC, SIT advance

Saraswathi Thiagaraja Arts College (Pollachi) and Sethu Institute of Technology (Karaikudi) entered the semifinal round-robin league in the men’s section of the 11th annual Doss-Remi Trophy State-level inter-collegiate volleyball tournament being held at Sawyapuram, near Tuticorin.

The results:

Men (quarterfinals): Sathyabama bt Pope’s College 25-16, 25-17; SKC (Coimbatore) bt St. Xaviers (Palayamkottai) 27-25, 25-13; STAC (Pollachi) bt St. Joseph’s EC 25-20, 25-14; SIT bt A.J. College (Sivakasi) 25-12, 25-14.

Women: League: Pool A: Vaishnav bt St. Mary’s (Tuticorin) 25-3, 25-9; PSGR College bt St. Mary’s 25-18, 25-12; Pool B: SRM University bt WCC (Nagercoil) 25-7, 25-7; St. Joseph’s bt WCC 25-14, 25-16.

Chess tournament
