BHUBANESWAR: After Pondicherry-based noted Odissi dancer Sangeeta Dash, New Delhi-based acclaimed painter Jagannath Panda and this year’s Sarala Samman awardee eminent writer Haraprasad Das, it was the turn of prominent painter Asit Kumar Patnaik to be featured in the meet-the-artist series being hosted in the City by the Orissa Samskruti Academy on Wednesday.

Aptly christened as ‘Aalap’ (a dialogue), the 17-month-old academy hosts such sessions at to initiate an interaction among the cross section of artists, scholars and art admirers to develop a holistic approach towards appreciation of culture, explained Academy’s chairperson Kedar Mishra.

Interacting with the gathering that comprised artists, academicians and critics, Asit, the New Delhi-based young artist who was a gold medallist at the National Youth festival and Benaras Hindu University, pointed out that though Orissa has a number of talented artists, lack of timely exposure have hampered their progress towards national recognition. His graduation at the Government College of Art and Craft at Khallikote in Ganjam district enriched his artistic sensibility; but the opportunity to study different genres of art in the national capital helped him to establish himself there, explained the artist who has exhibited his works in shows alongside Indian’s prominent artists.

While Asit’s former teacher and principal of the city-based B.K.College of Art and Craft A.C.Sahoo introduced the artist and evaluated his style, Orissa Lalit Kala Akademi’s vice president Sarat Rath also shared his views on Orissa’s contemporary art scenario. The interaction was followed by a slide show of Asit’s works.
